Lesbiantics

I agree with Mustachio of the Turalyon realm (reply #10), I have high hopes for this Warcraft forum thread: “Why is homosexuality excluded from lore?”

Weehehe of Spirestone wrote:

Dear Blizzard:

I noticed that in the lore, there seem to be no LGBT (#*@@!%%, gay, bisexual or transgendered) characters. (I believe GLBT to be phallogocentric). Though hetersexual relationships are visible, there are no great passionate homosexual romances that seem to have occurred. Am I correct in this factual assertion?

If so, what does this imply? That in wonderfully magical Azeroth, no one is born gay, #*@@!%% or transgendered? O’Rly?

Why do the lore writers self-censor themselves when it comes to issues of sexual identity politics?

Would the lore writers please do us a favor and consider adding or modifying the lore to include at least 1 #*@@!%% character, 1 gay character, 1 bisexual character and 1 transgendered character? C’mon, throw us a bone here! It’s 2006, not 1906.

Respectfully Yours

(heh, lesbian is a naughty word in Azeroth.)

I think we all know the answer to that, but I anxiously await the corporately sanitized, politically correct response. I hope it includes the word “phallogocentric”.

(Holy shit! In the five minutes it took me to cut/paste this post, the thread grew to five pages. Go Go phallogocentric thread!!)

  1. While Blizzard understandably won’t put obvious references in the game, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t there. 🙂

First of all, there is an entire race where men slept and women ruled and fought. There’s holy men who wear pink and steal dresses. And there’s a transgender orc in the Caverns of Time.

  2. Thread nuked already, dammit…

I think it’s very much a policy of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’, given the antics I saw around Valentine’s Day last, with all that perfume and cologne nonsense – any Alliance who completed it r teh bisexual!

  4. I dunno what this guy’s talking about, according to gerenal chat just about everyone in the game is a homo.

  5. Goddamit. I wanted that thread to LIVE and THRIVE!

Anyways, here’s a Furl Archive of the first page. FYI, I usually Furl forum threads (page 1 only) when I find them. Sometimes they go missing if they’re really good donchaknow. My entire Furl archive here.

Here’s a Flickr screenshot of the first page, in case Furl isn’t working as intended.

  6. Considering they forced WoW’s first “gay” guild to rename themselves and stop promoting themselves as being such, I’d say there’s a deep sense of homophobia in Blizzard. The question is whether it is actual homophobia or just fear of where allowing such things could lead to.

In a world where the most powerful nation (and many of the lesser but still more powerful nations on this planet) are lead by people who hide behind their religion to actively get around their homosexual discrimination (discrimination that should rightfully land them in court), the latter is all too likely.

Oh and by the way, I’m not gay. I simply oppose the blatant and obvious hypocricy I see in these cases. I find it hard to believe they can get away with such things.

  7. They don’t need to write the lore, they have plenty of heterosexual young men ready to turn homosexuel ‘roleplaying’ sweet hwat lesbian cyber sex. Besides, c’mon, blood elves, thats just metrosexuel gayness incarnated.

  9. You can’t blame Blizz for trying to stay away from it. It’s a very politically charged subject, and they want to distance themselves from it as much as possible.

As much as I’d love to see two lesbian NE elites going at it, it probably won’t happen. Too many kids play WoW, and it’d border on being soft porn at best. Besides, I don’t think I’d want to play a game where the male quest NPC hits on my male toon. Better yet, the man hating dike NPC who belittles all males needing the quest, and hits on all the chicks.

People come up with these bold ideas, but never really make suggestions on how to safely go about implementing them. Rather, they attack Blizz for not doing it. Shit happens and it’s Blizz’s game. They have a vision of the game and it’s up to them to decide what goes into it.

  10. Why are there so few in ANY fiction. Picking on Blizzard is pretty silly they are not doing anything anyone else isn’t. I have read tons of fantasy and sci fi, I can count on one hand the number of gay relationships. You might as well ask why aren’t Jarlaxle and Entreri gay, or any other Forgottem Realms characters.

In fact, it probably isn’t even some sort of conspiracy, people tend to write what they know.

This sort of reminds me of the new Battlestar Galactica. They changed a lot of the characters to female to try to modernize it and show how sensitive they are, or something. But in the process they removed all the black characters. They went one step forward and 2 steps back. Eventually they had to make a minor black character into a major one halfway through season 2.
