Rumors of Rumors

I caught wind of an ebay link to a Warcraft player auction for a level 60 character. By the time my slacker e-friend sent the actual link to me, it had been shut down, but said e-friend reported that it was the original level 60 of the game.

I asked what the hell does “original” mean? Did he mean the first level 60? The first level 60 on our server? He couldn’t answer the question with enough details to satisfy even my loose sense of fair and balanced.

He added that the account had since been banned by Blizzard. I asked where did he get that info then? How did he know this? Apparently, he heard from “some dude”.

Ok, so what we have here is: Some level 60 may have been ebaying his account which might have been subsequently banned by Blizzard.

Ya, we have nothing.

Reminded me of a little prank one of the … how shall I say … assholes from my EQ guild used to get even with players from rival guilds. He would hunt around until he found his target’s Magelo profile, he’d take a screenshot and jot down the profile number, then list the poor bastard on ebay without blacking out the identifying information.

Few hours (maybe a day) later, the server boards would explode with ebay accusations, some hapless chump would report the auction to Sony and then “bye bye Rival Player”.

Goddamn, he was diabolical, and completely unrepentent, I might add. He was one of those “ends justify the means” kind of guys.

Today’s subliminal lesson: Nothing says Internet like rumors and anonymity.
